About Harper Lee Nelle Harper Lee is an American novelist. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature for this book. She corresponded with Truman Capote, her childhood friend, in his investigations for writing In Cold Blood. She also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961.
