In the book, Tom Swift is a young inventor who lives with his father, Barton Swift, in Shopton, New York. Tom is interested in all things mechanical, and he has a well-equipped workshop in the basement of his house.One day, Tom decides to buy a motorcycle. He modifies it with a number of his own inventions, including a new engine and a new transmission. Tom is very proud of his motorcycle, and he names it the "Swift Motor-Cycle."Tom and his friends, Ned Newton and Bud Barclay, go on a number of adventures with the Swift Motor-Cycle. They ride through the countryside, they explore abandoned buildings, and they even help to solve a mystery.One day, Tom's father is working on a revolutionary new turbine design. Tom volunteers to transport the blueprints and a prototype of the turbine to Albany, New York. However, Tom is ambushed by a group of men who are working for a rival company. The men steal the blueprints and the prototype, and they leave Tom stranded on the side of the road.
