It is barrel shaped with a simple membrane on both the sides, like a smaller version of the dhol. B) The Sarod is a stringed instrument, used mainly in Hindustani music. It is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound. The Sarod is an adaptation of the Afghan ‘rabab’, which arrived in India during the 16th century. C) Sitar is perhaps the most well known of the In¬dian in¬stru¬ments. It is an instrument with long hollow neck and gourd body produces a rich resonance and harmony. D) The Nagada is a drum with a rounded back and a hide head, usually played in pairs. These drums are about 1 - 2 feet in diameter and played with sticks. E) The Mridangam is a percussion instrument of ancient origin from Carnatic form of music. It is believed that the sound it created matched and represented the movement and dances of the Gods. F) The most widely-known and used free-reed aerophone in India is the harmonium. It was conceived in the West, but today largely resides in the Indian subcontinent.
