Historians trace the “Seven Older Cities of Delhi” which developed around the fortresses of each dynasty that ruled Delhi from 1100 AD through 1947 AD. Taking inspiration from Delhi’s history and to relive the past, we present to you our souvenir coaster set, featuring six major eras which started to impact Delhi for the next six-and-a-half centuries, primarily in architecture. A) Mehrauli was established by Qutubuddin Aibak, Mohammad Ghori’s viceroy. Presently know by the same name, Mehrauli. B) Siri was established by Allauddin Khilji having origins from a Turkish tribe in Afghanistan. Presently covers the Siri Fort area. C) Tughlakabad was built by the Tughlaks, most famous of them being the headstrong, tyrannical ruler Mohammed bin Tughlak. Presently covers the area around Tughlakabad Fort ruins. D) Firozobad was built by Firoze Shah Tughlak, the entire complex is now known as Kotla Firoze Shah. E) Shahjahanabad was built by Shahjahan, the Mughal emperor. It was a walled city, some of its gates and parts of the wall still stand in Old Delhi area, most famous of them being Chandani Chowk. F) New Delhi, under the British rule in 1911 the capital shifted to Delhi and New Delhi was built in and around Raisina Hills, also called Lutyens’ Delhi, named after the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Presently it covers the area around Central Delhi.
