The guava (Psidium guajava) is a small, fast-growing, evergreen tree or shrub that's native to tropical America and can grow up to 10 meters tall. It has a superficial root system, a slender trunk, and low-hanging branches. The trunk is covered in a smooth, pale bark that peels off in thin flakes and can be green to red brown in color. The leaves are oval or oblong, about 7.6 cm long, and are smooth on top and hairy on the bottom. Guava trees produce white flowers with four petals that are about 2.5 cm wide, and then oval or pear-shaped fruits that can be green to yellow in color and up to 7.6 cm in diameter. The flesh inside the fruit can be white, yellow, pink, or red and contains many yellowish seeds. The pulp has a musky or pungent odor.
