In 1796, when the British appeared on the stage of Ceylon, they had a crumbling empire, alone in its existence. In the next 19 years the British established themselves as rulers and with the capture of the king Vikrama Raja Sinha a Kingship that had lasted unbroken for the last 2400 years came to an end. This book sets out the history of this period. The material for this book is almost exclusively from documents preserved at the Public Records Office, London. This book is a reprint of the 1939 edition.
