Spring calipers are used for measuring and transferring external and internal diameters, and are especially useful for measuring wall thicknesses and areas that are hard to reach: External measurements: Spring outside calipers are used to measure the outside diameters and thicknesses of objects. They are popular with woodturners and are useful for measuring wall thicknesses and hard-to-reach areas. Internal measurements: Spring inside calipers are used to measure hole diameters and distances between surfaces. Transferring measurements: Spring calipers can be used to transfer measurements to a ruler. Spring calipers have two types of legs, one for internal measurements and one for external measurements. The ends of the legs that perform the measurement are away from the journal.
