The story is set in the South during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. It revolves around two characters: Tom, a Confederate soldier who has been imprisoned by Union forces, and Jack, a Union soldier who is guarding him.Tom and Jack are both prisoners in their own way. Tom is physically confined within the prison walls, while Jack is trapped by his duty to guard the prisoners and the expectations of his fellow soldiers.
