Uglies, a science fiction novel, is a story about the future of the world we live in. It is a world in which everyone undergoes extreme plastic surgery when turn sixteen. They are called the Uglies before the plastic surgery and are transformed into Pretties after the surgery. Summary of the Book We live in a society that gives too much attention to looks and nobody thinks they look good enough. In this book, the future of the human race has gone several steps further in taking care of this issue. This world is full of people who are all turned pretty when they turn sixteen. Tally, the protagonist, is very close to sixteen and is excited about undergoing the much awaited pretty operation. She will soon be the perfect pretty and join the rest. However, things change when she sneaks a peek into the New Pretty Town. She meets her friend Shay who says she is going to go against the operation and a while later, she escapes to a settlement called Smoke, a place where all the runaways live. Will she go with the operation or revolt? About Scott Westerfeld Scott Westerfeld is a writer of young adult fiction and is best known for the Uglies series. Other books written by him are The Risen Empire and The Killing of Worlds. He has also written a manga series called Shay’s Story, and has authored the Leviathan trilogy.
