This book presents the results of empirical analysis of urbanization in India with some theoretical underpinnings and policy implications. The point of view is that of a geographer, although there are implications for the other social scientists and urban and regional planners. To bring out the significance of spatial dimensions, the urbanization process and patterns are analysed at the national, state, sub-regional, city-regional and intra-city levels. To gain better insights, the city/town is taken as the unit of analysis. At the city-regional level, the village is taken as the unit of analysis, and at the intra-city level, the units of analysis are households, establishments, wards and ecological units.
