The primary function of an eraser is to remove pencil, pen, or ink markings from a surface, most commonly paper. When a person applies an eraser to the writing surface, the material of the eraser interacts with the mark left by the pencil or ink. In the case of graphite, the eraser gently picks up and removes the particles of graphite from the paper. For ink marks, an eraser may work by scraping the ink off the surface, leaving the paper underneath mostly undisturbed.
