About The Book -: The author examines the problems of religion critically from the standpoint of biology, psychology, metaphysics, etc. He makes a minute survey of metaphysical, psychological and political thinkers, their attitude towards religious concepts and a critical estimate of science and scientific investigations and in the light of these he builds up his own rational system of thought. This is one of the pinnacles of 19th century western Vedic scholarship. It is one of the three volumes in the Sacred Books of the East which Max muller, the series editor, was the sole author. Max muller focuses here on four dozen hymns in the Rigvedas to the 'Storm Gods:' the Maruts. Distant relations of Mars, Thor, and Ares, the Maruts are Vedic-era deities associated with lightning, thunder, and the heavens. The true value of this work is Muller's deep analysis of the mythological, linguistic and poetic background of the hymns. The index, which gives every root form of every word in the text, is practically a skeleton key to Vedic Sanskrit. About the Author -: F. Max Muller (Friedrich Max Müller 1823-1900) was a German- philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies. Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. He also promoted the idea of a Turanian family of languages. In need of a scholarship to attend Leipzig University, Müller successfully sat his abitur examination at Zerbst. While preparing, he found that the syllabus differed from what he had been taught, necessitating that he rapidly learn mathematics, modern languages and science. He entered Leipzig University in 1841 to study philology, leaving behind his early interest in music and poetry. He received his degree in 1843. His final dissertation was on Spinoza's Ethics.
