Orientalism is the politically-charged way in which Western artists have represented gender, race and ethnicity in the cultures of North Africa and Asia. This anthology addresses orientalism in film from pre-cinema fascinations with Egyptian culture through the "Whole New World" of Aladdin. The 11 essays included utilize such areas as cultural studies, genre criticism, psychoanalysis and feminism. Among the films discussed are "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Sheik", "Caesar and Cleopatra", "The Letter", "Indochine" and several films of France's "cinema colonial" (such as "Pepe le Moko").
