Voluntary Organisations play a vital role in the shaping and implementation of participatory democracy. Their creadibility lies in the responsible and constructive role they play in society. They have been contibuting immensely for quite sometime towards various development programmes. The UN General Assembly in 52nd session declared the year 2001 as International Year of Volunteers (IYV). In India, societies, associations, organisations, trusts or companies registered under the Socities Registration Act, 1882; the Charitable & Religious Trusts Act, 1920 or as a charitable company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 are considered as Vos/NGOs. Recently, in an exercise to map the diversity of voluntary sector in India, Rajesh Tandon (2001) has provided the following typology of civil society associations. About the Author Sushila Kulhari (Born : 10-05-1969) She holds a doctorate Degree in Political Science from Rajasthan University. She has participated in various national seminars and workshops and presented papers on the forum. Often she conducts extra-curricular programmes for the students. She is social worker. She has served voluntary organisations, societies and associations in different capacities. She is nonorary consultant to many women's voluntary organisations and NGOs in India and abroad. She has travelled extensively in India and Sri Lanka for various social welfare projects and development programmes. She has written and edited several books on Voluntary Organisation in Third World Countries' and Social Work and contributed numerous research papers in national and international women's conferences.
