War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy that was first published in 1869. The story gives us details of the events surrounding the French invasion of Russia. The book is useful for BA students who love literature. Summary of the Book Pierre Bezukhov is the illegitimate child of a count. He is fighting for his rightful inheritance, and wants to achieve spiritual fulfillment at the same time. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky has left his family behind in order to fight in the war against Napoleon. Both Pierre and Prince Andrei have fallen for Natasha Rostov, the beautiful daughter of a nobleman. The story follows these characters from different backgrounds as they struggle to fight against Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in their own way. The problems that they face are very unlike the usual problems of their era, culture and history. As the story goes, readers will realize that these characters are among the most moving figures in the world of literature. About Leo Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer, philosopher and political thinker who mostly wrote novels and short stories. He was a master of realistic fiction and is considered to be one of the world’s greatest novelists. He is best known for two of his long novels: War and Peace and Anna Karenina.
