Welcome Home, by Margaret Dickinson, depicts the story of two families divided by war and united by love. Summary of the Book Neighbours Edie Kelsey and Lil Horton have been close friends for more than two decades, sharing the joys and sorrows of a harsh life as the spouses of fishermen in Grimsby. Edie's son, Frank and Lil's daughter, Irene, fall in love and get married at a young age. But the announcement of war in 1939 changes everything for the two families. Frank goes to fight in the war and Irene and the baby, Tommy, along with Edie's youngest son are sent to the countryside for safety. With Edie's husband, Archie, fishing the risky waters of the North Sea and daughter Beth in London doing important war work, Edie's family is completely broken. Love and friendship sustain Edie and Lil’s lives, but disaster follows when there is an apprehension about Beth vanishing. On the other hand, Irene's reappearance during the VE day celebrations takes both the families by storm. It might even tear Edie and Lil's friendship apart.
