Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, by Edward Albee, is a play that depicts the breakdown of the marriage of a middle-aged couple. Summary of the Book Martha and George, a middle-aged couple, are going through a rocky patch in their married life. One evening, Nick and Honey, an innocent young couple visit them after a university faculty party, and are drawn into the former couple’s unpleasant and exasperated relationship. The title, a pun on the song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” from Three Little Pigs, really translates to “Who’s Afraid of Life without Illusion?” as Virginia Woolf was well-known for bringing out the emotional truths stirring behind the eyes of her characters - a question they often set out to find an answer for. This book won the Tony Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, both in 1963. It has been adapted into a major motion picture by the same name as well. About Edward Albee Edward Franklin Albee III is an American playwright, whose works are often considered unsympathetic analyses of the modern condition. He has been honoured with several awards and recognition, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony Award, Special Tony Award, National Medal of Arts.
