Why I Supported The Emergency: Essays and Profiles, published in 2009, is a book of challenging hypotheses, stimulating interest in every reader. It is a collection of more than sixty pieces of essays and profiles veiling a wide range of subjects and personalities edited by Sheela Reddy. The author’s style in this book is modest, while his intellect and observations of events over the years have given him an unusual outlook of the world. A large string of details have been summed up together in a brief way. The book has been drafted with character sketches, history, and thoughts about historical figures such as Indira Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Jinnah, about people who strove for the economic development of India like J.R.D. Tata, G.D. Birla, and Sir C.P. Ramaswamy, about poets, writers, and even about the Bandit Queen, Phoolan Devi. The book is therefore a reminiscence of the past confined in a contemporary write-up. Khushwant Singh is the popular author of several historic books like the Tragedy Of Punjab, Train To Pakistan, We Indians, and many more. He was born on 2nd February in Punjab and went to the Government College at Lahore. Apart from being a writer, he was also a lawyer, a journalist, and a politician. He has received the Padma Vibhushan from the government of India in 2007. Since independence, he has been India’s widely known English writer.
