Wide Sargasso Sea depicts the love story of Antoinette Cosway and Mr. Rochester, which turns completely unpleasant after they get married. Summary of the Book Wide Sargasso Sea depicts three stages of Antoinette's life – the early life of Antoinette, the time from her childhood to her marriage with Mr. Rochester, and her moving to England. It takes readers back to the time when the Jamaicans had just achieved freedom from the British rule. It is written as a prequel to the novel Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte. The book has seen numerous adaptations. In 1993, a film adaptation was released, followed by an opera adaptation in 1997. A television series was also made in 2006. In 2011, a song adaptation of this book was also done by Stevie Nicks. About Jean Rhys Jean Rhys was a renowned writer who hailed from Roseau, Dominica. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the year 1909, but was forced to leave, as she was unable to speak "proper English". Some of the other works published by Rhys include: The Left Bank and Other Stories, Voyage in the Dark, Tigers are Better-Looking: With a Selection from ‘The Left Bank’, Sleep it Off Lady, and Good Morning, Midnight. She passed away in 1979, before finishing her autobiography.
