A group of British boys are stranded on an uninhabited island, and they take it upon themselves to govern themselves in William Golding’s dystopian classic, Lord of the Flies. Summary of the Book As the world cringes in the aftermath of a chaotic nuclear war, a British plane crash lands near an isolated island in a desolate part of the Pacific Ocean. The sole survivors of this crash are young boys, in their teenage or preadolescent years. One of them, Ralph, brings them together following the crash and he is soon elected their chief. However, some of the other boys, part of a musical choir led by Jack Merridew, do not offer him their votes. Ralph takes it upon himself to declare the three goals of the survivors: to have fun, survive and maintain a smoke signal that will notify passing ships of their presence on the otherwise abandoned island. Soon, the boys set about organizing a makeshift government, unsuspecting that they’re soon descending into a feral mode of governance, one that will surely become their undoing. This classic tale of survival is also considered to be an examination on the themes of governance, totalitarian regimes and the conflict between the human impulses for civilization and power.
