The UN notes that globally women constitute half of the world's population; compose 30 per cent of the official labour force; perform 60 per cent of working hours; receive 10 per cent of the world's income but own eve less than one per cent of the world's property. Women comprise roughly 50 per cent of the population of India, of which more than 70 per cent are confined to rural areas. Nearly 78 per cent of all economically active women are engaged in agriculture as compared to 63 per cent of men. About 30 per cent of the women in the country are farmwomen and are directly enaged in farming. Almost 50 per cent of rural female workers are classified as agricultural labourers and 37 per cent as cultivators. The need to generate data on rural women in our country is therefore of absolute and concurrent importance before setting any development goals or planning strategy. The research on which this book is based focuses on women in two agricultural scenarios in Karnataka, southern India, namely dryland and irrigated farming and details every observable activity undertaken by farm women, their social and economic statuses, level of empowerment etc therein.
