There is a growing concern among different sections of the society about the effects of television. THe weaker sections are worried about the use of the medium for the benefit of the powerful and the influential. There is a strong feeling which is supported by systematic studies that women have been exploited by tghe medium. The present study is almed at finding out whether if there is discrimination and explottaion women and if it is so, the causes responsibnle for this: expecially when the medium os government owned and in a developing phase. It is an attempt at invstigating the problem from differnt angles. Thus encompassing three aspects: Policy, Personnel and Programme. The revlew of the objectives of TV programmes helped in evaluationg its force to generate gender equality. The interviews of the empolyees of TV centres regarding their interpretation of the objective and concetp of gender equality revealed the ineractive effect of the way of thinking of induvidual employee and the obectives. The objecitves include clarity in statement of the objecitves and the system of informaiton flow from policymakers. In the study three TV centres were covered : 1. Delhi Doordarshan Kendra : Caters to thje whole nation: 2. Ahmedabad Doordarshan Kendra : Responsible for region specific programmes, and 3. Development Educaion Communication Unit/ISRO: Devoted to rural development and education.
