The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (Party Congress) held in November 2012 in Beijing not only witnessed a transition to the fifth generation of leadership and brought Xi Jinping to power but is also considered a major turning point in Chinese polity. The policies announced at the Congress were stamped by Xi Jinping’s imprimatur of the Chinese Dream. The notion of the Chinese Dream has been dynamic, with additions to the initial definition in response to new challenges facing the country.A decade later, the 20th Party Congress in 2022 highlighted a ‘new era’ of Chinese politics and power woven into an ideological and developmental model for the world and, as expected, extended a third term to Xi Jinping. In this context, the book by Indian experts comprehensively analyses the narrative of success as well as risks and challenges facing China in various fields.Part I of this book consists of six chapters dealing with foreign policy, multilateralism and security issues in the ‘new era’. Part II of the book comprises of five chapters and analyses various facets of domestic politics, including the policies and ideology of the CPC, economic reforms, China’s policy in its minority regions and the media. Part III of the book focuses on economic and developmental aspects, including the Chinese economic dream, global supply chain issues, environment, energy and social construction.
