Bare Minimum Independent Publishing Checklist Okay, you've followed along this far, so I'll take a moment to sum up. Here's what (in my opinion) you need as a bare minimum to get started as an independent publisher, more or less in order: Create an author website, including an entertaining bio. Create a good product, i.e., book or story, including title. Identify your genre (and subgenre, if possible). Identify how you're going to publish (independent, big publishing, or a smaller house). If you're going Indy, your format (POD, ebook, audio). Identify your distributors and what their requirements are. Prepare your product for publishing (critiques, editing, formatting/layout). Create a cover. Create a back-cover blurb (short and long, if necessary). Publish your book and check it for attractiveness (including doing test galleys for PODs). Edit as necessary. Distribute your book through your distributors. Announce your book at your website, including links to all your distributors, the cover, the back-cover blurb, and a brief excerpt of your story. Is that everything you need to do? No.The talk to the people at Print & Publish who can provide self publishing services to whatever extent you need.
