This textbook provides an introduction toabstract algebra for advanced undergraduatestudents. Based on the authors’ notes atthe Department of Mathematics, NationalChung Cheng University, it contains materialsufficient for three semesters of study. It beginswith a description of the algebraic structuresof the ring of integers and the field of rationalnumbers. Abstract groups are then introduced.Technical results such as Lagrange’s theoremand Sylow’s theorems follow as applications ofgroup theory. The theory of rings and idealsforms the second part of this textbook, withthe ring of integers, the polynomial rings andmatrix rings as basic examples. Emphasiswill be on factorization in a factorial domain.The final part of the book focuses on fieldextensions and Galois theory to illustrate thecorrespondence between Galois groups andsplitting fields of separable polynomials.The textbook is more accessible and lessambitious than most existing books coveringthe same subject. Readers will also find thepedagogical material very useful in enhancingthe teaching and learning of abstract algebra.
