A Critical History Of English Literature (Volume II), written by David Daiches, is a work of non-fiction that takes a look at some of the eras in English literature, from the restoration to the present day scenario. The second volume in a two-volume set, this book covers chapters 15 to 29. From the Augustan age to romanticism to the Victorian era, A Critical History Of English Literature (Volume II) presents various aspects of prose and poetry over the centuries. It introduces several great personalities of English and Scottish literature, including Defoe, Jane Austen, Wordsworth, Blake, Walter Scott, Byron, Keats, Shelley, and William Morris. Daiches provides a historical as well a critical perspective on these rich literary traditions. This volume, along with the first, was published in 1960. David Daiches was a Scottish scholar, author, and literary critic. Some of his works include The Novel And The Modern World, Two Worlds: An Edinburgh Jewish Childhood, and Sir Walter Scott And His World. His writing often focused on Scottish culture and literature, and English literature. He was born on September 2, 1912, in Sunderland. He attended George Watson’s College. Beginning with the University of Edinburgh, he had a long, rewarding teaching career in the UK, Canada, and the US. Daiches was married more than once, and he had three children from his first marriage. He died on July 15, 2005.
