A Doctor to Defend: The Binayak Sen Story, by Minnie Vaid, offers insight into one of the most controversial and chilling cases. Summary of the Book This book depicts a story of denied justice. Binayak Sen completed his graduation at one of India’s premier institutions, and decided to practice medicine amongst the tribal communities of Chhattisgarh. Several years of dedicated work led him to believe that sustainable health care can only be achieved in the presence of human rights. When the controversial Salwa Judum, the vigilante force assumed by some as State-backed dread, was created to counter the Naxal movement, Binayak was one of the first to raise concern. Dr. Sen’s frankness led to his arrest on May 14, 2007, on the suspected charges of being a “fake” doctor and backing up the Naxalite movement. He was denied bail on the grounds that he was a menace to State security. He was even subjected to a spell of solitary confinement. On December 24, 2010, Binayak Sen was held guilty of treason and punished to life imprisonment by the District Sessions Court in Raipur. This book offers a deeper insight to one of the most hotly debated cases in the country.
