After the invasion of Assam, an eastern state of India, by the Burmese, in the early 19th century a better period of economic times gradually arrived in Assam. Tea cultivation, railways, coal mining, river transportation and extraction of crude oil were initiated by the British for industrial development of India. Before the British came to Assam, four of Assam's largest untouched assets– land, rivers, forests and minerals were waiting for their exploration. For the development of these properties, the historic company named ‘Assam Railways and Trading Company Limited’ was formed in London on July 30, 1880. C.F. Barney, the last chairman of the company authored a book "The Story of the Assam Railways and The Trading Company Limited (1881-1951)" published in London in 1951, which outlined the industrial development of Assam. The original book has been translated into Assamese in the current translated book-- “A R & T Company aru Asomor oudyogik bikas”. The translated book provides a detailed account of the dynamics changes of the company with additional photos and a lot of information besides. This translated book is not only a book of history but also rich in commerce, social science and engineering knowledge.
