The story of this novel is set in a small town of India. Just after the post-independence period of India, the Landlords (Zamindars) who had enjoyed a life almost of royalty, had to face the decline of their fortunes. This is a story of such a family. The old traditions and culture had to change with the times. Aasu, the granddaughter of the head of the family, Mahavir Chandra, rebels and fights her own battles. Does she emerge victorious?
