The contributors bring a broad and innovative approach to rural history as they examine the different and complex ways in which the countryside of the past can be understood. They explore topics ranging from Aboriginal-White settler relations to prostitution to the triumph of the codling moth over Okanagan orchardists. Representing a wide range of fields, the contributors bring expertise, methodologies, and theoretical perspectives from social and political history, environmental studies, cultural studies, geography and anthropology. This collection of essays challenge traditional readings of British Columbia history. It suggests that the emphasis on resource extraction, capitalist-labour relations, and urban society is not broad enough to support the analysis of many facets of the province's history.
