This study attempts to analyse the British Forest Policy from 1864 to 1947, in particular context of Assam. Situating the geography and history of the region, it traces the genesis and development of British forest policy. It also examines the socio-economic and environmental impact of the policy on the people as well as on the state as a whole. The book will be especially useful for historians, students, teachers, researchers, botanists, environ-mentalists and policy-makers. About the Author Rajib Handique (b. 1967), M.A., (Gold-medalist from Gauhati University), is presently Deputy Registrar (Academic) of Dibrugarh University. He has earlier served as lecturer in History at M.D.K. Girls' College and in the Department of History, Dibrugarh University. A life member of the Indian History Congress and the North East India History Association, he is actively associated with various academic bodies and organisations of the country. Dibrugarh University awarded him the Ph.D. degree in 2000 for his thesis British Forest Policy and its Impact on Assam, 1864-1947. He has a large number of research papers to his credit.
