Born in a materialistic world, grown up surrounded by worldly ambitions, Augustine decided to change. Only, this change was not easy, as you will agree as you read his Confessions. Summary of the Book Augustine was born and brought up in Thagaste, somewhere in the east of Algeria, where he went to school and lived a life of material pursuits. Worldly pleasures, school pranks and sexual adventures were a part of his life. His materialistic life had led to grief and disorder. This does not mean that he did not share a love for philosophy. He was a follower of Manecheism. However, what followed after a while was his growing interest in Catholicism, the religion of this mother. This does not mean that they gave up his materialistic ways. Sexual indulgence was still a part of his life. Time passes, and Augustine came to the realization that the real truth is found only in Christianity. But giving up his worldly ways was difficult. What follows is a struggle, ending with Augustine as a devoted and chaste Catholic. About St Augustine Augustine was a philosopher and theologian whose writings have led to various developments in the fields of Christianity as well as Western philosophy. His conversion from a worldly life of entertainment to a spiritual one has led him to earn the title “The Patron of Brewers”. The son of St Monica, St Augustine is one of the greatest Saints known about today.
