About the Author Jaswant Singh, born in 1938, is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has been in charge of Finance, External Affairs and Defence during the NDA regime between 1998 and 2004. He is the former Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (1998-99). Major General Suraj Bhatia hails from Bannu, Pakistan. He did his schooling in Rawalpindi, and moved to India after Partition, being commissioned into the Indian Army in 1957. He participated in both 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan at the Sialkot and Chachhro sectors respectively.He was awarded Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) while serving in Arunachal Pradesh and the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation Card while fighting insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir.
