A young boy helps his father catch some pheasants in an ingenious fashion in Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, Danny the Champion of the World. Summary of the Book When Danny was merely four years old, his mother passed away. Ever since, he has lived with his father, William, in a Gypsy caravan, which William used as a filling station and garage. When Danny turns seven, his father teaches him about the world, and in particular, seven things that he would usually learn much later. Two years later, Danny discovers that his father poaches pheasants from a nearby estate. One day, his father fails to return from his poaching trip, and Danny goes to investigate. He finds his father trapped, and he brings him back home after freeing him. The estate belongs to a wealthy Mr. Hazel who hosts a shooting party every year and invites several notable people. The trap had been set there to discourage any poachers from trespassing. Angry that his father was injured, Danny decides to get back at Mr. Hazel by doing just what Mr. Hazel thought to prevent: capturing all the pheasants in the estate so that there would be none left to shoot.
