The name of Kalpi’s Handmade Paper has been referred many a times in ancient poetry which makes a representation of its history and artistry. The craft of making paper through hand is more than 900 years old. Kalpi handmade paper is the first to get the GI tag in the handmade paper category.This piece of textile is made from jute fabric of North 24 Parganas District, West Bengal, India. The predominance of jute industry in West Bengal dates back to hundreds of years and is mainly cultivated along the river sides. Jute is a natural fiber extracted from bark of plant, spun into strong threads to make variety of products.
