Yellow Bamboos are typically fast-growing perennials, with some species growing as much as 30 cm (1 foot) per day. The woody ringed stems, known as culms, are typically hollow between the rings (nodes) and grow in branching clusters from a thick rhizome (underground stem). Yellow bamboo is a perennial with finely textured green leaves and attractive golden-yellow stems. Considered a running bamboo, it's often planted to create privacy between properties because it grows quickly (often as quickly as 2 to 3 feet per year). It is one of the quickest ways to create. Bambusa vulgaris forms moderately loose clumps and has no thorns. It has lemon-yellow culms (stems) with green stripes and dark green leaves. Stems are not straight, not easy to split, inflexible, thick-walled, and initially strong. The densely tufted culms grow 10–20 m (30–70 ft) high and 4–10 cm (2–4 in) thick.
