This book is a comprehensive text on earthquake engineering of reinforced concrete buildings and masonry buildings. Summary Of The Book Owing to the recent surge in the incidence of earthquakes, it is becoming imperative for civil engineering students to understand the fundamentals of designing earthquake resistant buildings. The book provides a wide-ranging overview of these concepts which is suitable for an undergraduate as well as a postgraduate course in earthquake engineering. The book begins by introducing the context of designing earthquake resistant buildings by discussing engineering seismology, the seismic zoning map of India, and the various strong motion studies carried out in India. Issues related to structural dynamics are discussed next, including the theory of seismic pickups, numerical evaluation of dynamic response, and response spectra. It goes on to explain the key concepts behind the earthquake resistant design (ERD) of reinforced concrete buildings, followed by a discussion on their seismic analysis and modelling. The next two sections present the ERD of reinforced concrete buildings and of masonry buildings. The concluding section is on seismic evaluation and retrofitting of both these buildings types.
