The book examines the ramifications of the discourse on nature and modernity generated by the thought of key nineteenth-century figures in the English tradition and its effect on Indian writers and intellectuals. It explores the intellectual impact of writers like Wordsworth, Emerson, Thoreau, Carlyle, Ruskin, Morris and Carpenter on the early Indian nationalist thinkers like Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, M.K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. The book is, therefore, partly comparative, partly cultural study but firmly rooted in the idea of the nation before the "fragments" came in to complicate matters even further.
