Through Burmah , Siam and the Eastern Shan states. This book gives an account of a journey made during six months leave in the beginning of 1887 Like travelogues kept by army officers, this one does not profess any literary merit : it is a record of what the author saw and experienced in those foreign lands. He describes the people, their customs, the mode of living, social structure, trade, produce, and is peppered with amusing anecdotes. The author started at from Moulmein, and passed through Zimme, Kaing Tung, trans-Salaween Shan states, Utaradit, and ended his journey at Bangkok. There are 12 plates that show the facial structure of many ethnic types, and a map of Siam (Thailand). This book is a reprint of the 1888 edition.
