Throughout its history, southern India has hosted numerous powerful civilizations. Over the course of the region's more than two millennia of history, several dynasties and empires came and went. The great king Ashoka ruled over most of the Indian subcontinent during the earliest known period of the region's history. At different points in time throughout history, the dynasties of Satavahana, Chalukya, Pallava, Rashtrakuta, Chera, Chola, Pandya, Kakatiya, and Hoysala reached their zenith. These kingdoms engaged in ceaseless warfare both with one another and with other powers during the Muslim invasions of southern India. In reaction to Muslim intrusion, the Vijayanagara Empire arose, encompassing most of southern India and serving as a barrier against Mughal incursions into the region. The current encyclopaedia makes an effort to provide different facets of these kingdoms. They made significant contributions to art, architecture, administration, education, and other fields. Every dynasty possessed certain distinctive traits. This encyclopaedia made an effort to cover these incredibly distinctive features of these kingdoms.
