In 2010, Sam Kumar started a photography project, ‘Environmental Dance’, which combined his two passions – Nature and Dance. He photographed dancers in graceful movement in outdoor locations such as forests, mountains, parks, temples and monuments. Taking them away from their comfort zone of the stage or studio, Sam Kumar asked the dancers to react to the outdoor environment. The dancers were not posing for his picture but ‘dancing’ when the pictures were taken. Though it felt strange initially, the dancers quickly reacted to nature and enjoyed the shoots. All the dancers confided to him that it was a deeply satisfying experience for them! Over the years, Sam Kumar held many solo exhibitions of his Environmental dance photos at art galleries in Singapore, Thailand and India. In February 2021, Sam Kumar published his first photography book ENVIRONMENTAL DANCE. It consists of 126 pages of photographs of dance in nature which had shot with 18 international dancers from India, Holland, US, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. The images were captured in multiple locations in India, Singapore, Bali and Thailand between 2010 and 2019.
