Mouth gags were primarily designed to keep the mouth in the open position, improve exposure and later were to assist the anesthetist. Gags by Lane, Rose, French and Doyen-Jensen [Figure - 1] and [Figure - 2] simply held the mouth widely open, requiring a tongue stitch to maintain an airway and a view for the surgeon.
