In what would probably be one of the most famous novels written by Munshi Premchand, Gaban is the story of a young man named Ramanath. Ramnath happens to be charismatic yet morally flexible. To satisfy his wife’s excessive craving for jewellery, he gets involved in various complicated relationships and economic tangles. This results in an inevitable mess leading to social disgrace and problems between him and his wife. Gaban showcases the Indian society and captures the socio-economic scenario of pre-independent India. Munshi Premchand is amongst some of the most renowned Indian authors. Often referred to as 'Upanyas Samrat', his writings are in Hindi and Urdu. Born on 31st July 1880, he changed his name from Dhanpat Rai to his pen name Nawab Rai before switching to Premchand. He has written more than twelve novels and close to 250 short stories and essays. Realism is a recurrent theme in his writings. Some of his other works include Premashram (Hindi), Gosha-e-Afiyat (Urdu), Godaan, Nirmala, and Karmabhoomi. He died on October 8, 1936.
