The writer, also known as Sumaiya, was one of the abandoned babies dedicatedly cared for by nuns at the CHIJ orphanage on Victoria Street until her early teens. She developed a passion for reading and never thought she would have the opportunity to visit London or other parts of the world. However, as she grew older, she was determined to make her dream a reality. With borrowed money, she managed to travel to London, where she landed a job as a resident housekeeper for an aristocratic couple and stayed with them for three years.
