Benjamin Law’s Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East is a compelling book on the standpoints of Asian countries on gay life. The author has brought out myriad emotions that whirl around homosexuality in these countries. Summary of the book Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East documents the author’s perspectives on how gay life is looked upon in different countries of Asia. It is a witty take that chronicles the way of gay life in the largest continent of the world. The readers are sure to be taken on a journey – to Bali, Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia and India. Each country has its own stance to gay life. Some repel the way of life, some countries decriminalizes it. Some leaders staunchly oppose homosexuality followed in their countries while some spiritual leaders who are neutral and perhaps support gay life as just a choice of an individual. What starts as an amusing, wild, jovial journey also contains subtle elements of struggle, psychology and poignancy. Most of what the book records were some unheeded facts and social scenarios so far. With homosexuality being one of the most talked and debated about topics in the world, the book could not have been better timed to have been written. This book has been nominated for the Australian Book Industry Awards. About Benjamin Law Benjamin is a Sydney based writer, journalist and screenwriter. He has completed his PhD in Television Writing and Cultural Studies. He writes to Good Weekend, The Monthly and other publications regularly.
