A clean and concise account of the Rajputs is offered in this book. Divided into 5 chapters, they deal with their history and origin starting with the early history of the Aryans, the division into castes, Muslim invasions, Maratha excursions, Mughal dynasty, Mussalman Rajputs and the Solar and Lunar races; Chapter 2 gives an alphabetical classification and geographical distribution; chapter 3 deals with the religion, customs and religious festivals; chapter 4 describes the characteristics of the daily like of the Rajputs such as agriculture, clothing, education, food, widow remarriage, and Panchayats among others. The book end with 5 appendices that discuss recruiting, the eastern and western Rajputs Fairs, Rajputana, Northwestern provinces, and Oudh. This book is one in a series called “Handbooks for the Indian Army”, which describe the various martial races that served under British officers. The book on Gurkhas has also been published by AES. This present book is a reprint of the 1899 edition.
