Helen Simpson's previous collections have seen her win the Somerset Maugham Award and be chosen as 1991 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year and one of Granta's Twenty Best of Young British Novelists. This collection, her third and best yet, is a loosely linked set of stories about women - at work, at home and on holiday - that is poignant, perceptive, often sad and frequently funny.
