The book is an in-depth study into the lives of young vulnerable black girls of America who are subject to multiple sources of prejudices (race, class, gender, color), grow up amidst psychological & emotional turmoil and whose young selves fail to decipher their identity, position and meaning in an all-white society. Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Ntozake Shange, Anne Moody and Paule Marshall are the six distinguished black American writers who have been taken up in this study and who voice the problems and portray the intricate web of difficulties in which these innocent minds find themselves caught.
