Now a grown man, the protagonist, David tells us about the hardships he faced while growing up. The novel later shifts to the adult phase of his life, where we see him building a career as a proctor, getting married to Dora and then being shattered by her untimely death after a prolonged illness. He eventually marries his childhood companion Agnes.
