This book is a fascinating and wholly absorbing contribution to the history of the twentieth century. This fast-moving, lively and independent account of the politics and international affairs is enriched by intimate, perceptive and far from uncritical sketches of great leaders such as Gandhi, Jinnah, Nehru, Desai and Patel. Perhaps no other book reminds the reader so firmly that politics, even at its most exalted and dramatic, is about people. Certainly no one who is interested in India, in the history of British imperialism or in the realities of present day Asia can neglect this goldmine of a book. About the Author Durga Das was not only a colossus among India's great editors, both before and after independence, but also a great patriot and nationalist who contributed greatly to India's freedom struggle. Journalism for him was not a mere vocation but as he himself stated, "a mission in which one felt more than rewarded by the services he could render to the motherland."
